WHY DID MY 360 HAVE TO BREAK Fucking hell, you jinxed me! FFXIII was next on my Gamefly queue, for which the only reason I've remained subscribed was playing FFXIII since I couldn't afford it. The very next day, my PS3 (which I bought new, have had for less than a year, and have logged less than 100 hours on,) has no indication of power at all. Completely dead. Probably the power supply, and outside the 90 day Sony Warranty. Ironically, my 360, which I've had for years and have logged countless hours on, is still trucking fine... with luck, I can just swap for the 360 version of XIII and sill play it before my account expires. -_- wait wait wait...PS3 warranty is 1 year? They will replace it with a refurb, but it will be done for free.

WTF. Sentinel sucks. Vendetta is apparently useless. Any thoughts on this? Sentinel is awesome imo! You take like little to no damage. Set up a Para with 2 healers and a Sentinel, tops off the party very fast and easily. I think only Snow has Vendetta and your right, it doesnt seem to counter attack like its supposed to... Idk, Ive barely been able to play with Snow. I LOVE THIS FUCKING STORY! Sahz ftw sorry sorry, i meant i hate playing as sentinel, its obviously an extremely useful job in the party, but its just boring to play as of right now. i think i'm about to finish chapter 9

Yea I agree, it's kind of sucky when one of your Sentinels is party leader. Medic as well I guess.
I'm on chapter 9

So finally getting around to playing it. Still working my way through the game. Probably about 5 hours in.
I have to say, I've already formed some pretty strong initial impressions:
Final Fantasy XIII is a strong game that does a lot[/i] (by which I mean, absolutely everything) differently from previous entries in the series, and judged as a stand-alone game and not part of the series, is pretty fantastic.
However, it seems like the downside to this is it's a case of sequel in name only, as there are virtually no solid ties to the core series. In this regard, it suffers from "Spirits Within Syndrome." What made Spirits Within a Final Fantasy movie? ...Vague, forced references to the series that had very little bearing on the product, and an emphasis on storytelling and high production values.
It doesn't look like a Final Fantasy game. It doesn't sound like a Final Fantasy game. It doesn't play like a Final Fantasy game. It doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy game.
Let's not kid ourselves. If they had released it under a completely different name and removed the (so far two) very minor references to previous series entries, would you think that it was a Final Fantasy game? ...For that matter, would the game play any worse?
Of course not. And that's my problem with Final Fantasy XIII. On its own, it's a great product. As a Final Fantasy game, I have to wonder why they bothered keeping the name, if not for the obvious marketing reasons.

Lol, I'm like the only person in the world who seems to like this game. not true! i'm almost done with chapter 11 (i think), and i am loving it. once you get to (spoiler) gran pulse the game feels a lot different and there's much more to do. the game really picks up and becomes more fast paced and difficult the further along you get.

Lol, I'm like the only person in the world who seems to like this game. ...Judged as a stand-alone game and not part of the series, [it] is pretty fantastic. I don't dislike it. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's a pretty great RPG. I just feel like (thus far) there's been absolutely no reason justify this as a Final Fantasy game. Take FFXII as an example. It did a lot of toying around with the formulas, but for all the risks it took, it took great lengths to establish Ivalice as a world in the Final Fantasy universe. This is what is called a "variation on a theme." Yes, it features real-time (largely automated) combat, but you're exploring a vast world filled with crystals, airships, bombs, chocobos and all of the other series staples you've come to expect. New is great, don't get me wrong. I know you can't expect a series, even one like Final Fantasy, to keep recycling all the same material for this long without things starting to feel stale. My problem is that FFXIII isn't necessarily different in an attempt to "improve" on previous formulas, it's different for the sake of being different.

I'm not very far into FXIII and this is the first final fantasy that I decided I was going to sit down and play through. I had tried to go back to 8 and some old ones but the game just looks so ugly. The only way that ugly games stand the test of time is with a healthy does of Nostalgia- which I unfortunately don't have for those older games.
FXIII seems pretty cool. I don't play many console games so its hard for me to judge but comparing it to the open worlds of other things I've played its pretty linear. seems like the great: hold forward and press X while walking through the millionth hallway rpg.
I'm not bashing it, just describing it. I've heard it gets better or changes so I'll reserve finally judgment. Almost all RPG I play get compared to Earthbound and nothing can beat that because it is multiplied by Nostalgia to the 1000th power. If i wanted to sum up gaming during my childhood with one game it'd be "earthbound" haha.

I agree w. Sosa can't explore the world, halfway into the game and no Chocobo to ride, no towns to thoroughly check, only equip is a Weapon and Accessory, you can coast through the game (thusfar anyway) without upgrading any of your shit
One of the most exciting things of an FF game is reaching that new town, looking for sidequests, purchasing new equipment/spells, grinding outside for enough gil to buy everything you want then getting back into the storyline
