I have heard of Maat going apeshit as described above. However, PLD is one of just two jobs able to hang on (the other being THF). Save that Invincible for this occasion. I seem to recall Mirowr (finally!) beating Maat during just such a salvo.

Just think, after you beat him, you'll feel all that much better about it.

I'm 1000000000000% sure that this game does indeed decide you've lost before you actualy do... the reason being i go in last night do the exact same shit except screw up and use one WS while he had invincible still up and i beat him..... even though all my previous fights were 10x better then the one that got me the victory. I also believe once maat goes "ape shit" mode there is no way to win, i think he would just keep spamming asuran fist until i died, my logic behind that.... i took 3 on that SS, and the previous fights i only took 2 before a death... so pretty much all i did was waste High potions trying to stay alive while maat was going into apeshit mode which = hopeless...... needless to say i scored a victory and i'm happy yet somewhat disapointed in how they designed the "Test" first of all pld's shouldn't have to resort to DD to pass a paladin test and secondly its just not fair... its all luck... sometimes you get a bad testiomny and then he goes bonkers on you... like X was telling me last night... i don't think SE knows jack about how the game works

I still don't get the hi-pots thing. In the time it takes you to use a hi-pot, maat has hit you for twice as much as it restores. (maybe not twice as much on pld, but certainly not worth the lost time I'd think)

I'm still not buying the whole "luck" thing. Sure, he could be an ass and pwnt you with a Asurn Fist, but it's how you handle the situation that test's you skill with your job. That's the whole point of this fight.
To Test you. Strats I read for DRG didn't even metion using Super Jump at any point of the fight, or even using the Wyvern for anything besides extra damage. But, because I know my job, I used Ember to tank Maat while I poped a Potion without getting hit.
It's all about how you handle things, do you freak out and say "He's not suppose to do that! I quit! *bitch bitch bitch*" or "Wow, that was unexpected, now I know to look out for that, and this is what I'll do next time to stop it from happening."

+1 Kaifu.
I tested Maat at 66. I learned a couple of things, so when I was 69, I was confident in my strategy and knew exactly what to do, didn't even have to lean on any meds.
I think most people come out of the maat fight(s) as better players.
EDIT:
This is alot like COP. Most things difficult in this game, people who lose will pass off as bad luck. We just lost ouryu last night, for instance. He terrorized my hundred fists right at the start. He killed our blm after 1 freeze. Is that why we lost?
Hell no. That fight was salvagable for most of it. We made errors, small and large, that cost us that fight. Had we cut down on those errors, we still would've won. Next time, we won't make as many errors.

Coming from RDM maat, I will have to aggree, alot of it is luck. Beyond only resisting sleep; luck on resists and if he decides to go ape shit.
I think his telltale quote before spamming Asuran Fists is sure enough evidence imo.
Any other reasons why he would say "You've lost" before your dead and he spams 3+ Asuran Fists back to back?

I can't believe with all these rdm's fighting him so many times, a better strategy hasn't been found.
MNK's have 3 separate strategies, depending on how you like to play, that can be used to dispatch him. I know it's not viewed as an impossible fight like rdm is, but you'd have to think by now someone would come up with something.
