In contrast of my "Bad Guy" topic, a good guy one.
What makes a hero? Self scarifice, strength, fate, hourglass figure, big sword+spiky hair, a burned down home town, animesa, lost in space/time, forced to, has nothing better to do, mother's a dragon god to name a few...
Make sure to add what video game they are from, as some of us might not know/remember said person off hand.
Thou art dead.

I like em all... I have to say. They all bring something to the table. Cloud isn't who he thought he was and he goes through tremendous character development. But the prize for character development can't go to him, it goes to squall. I actually really like Zidane now that I think about it. I mean... Square never introduced an upbeat non cool guy hero before. Zidane really supports his friends and sticks up for the party. I love tidus too! ><! All alone.. confused.. He says some really corny stuff but... I mean he goes to this new world and he finds the meaning of his life. I know people who don't like the story of this game. FFX was really a journey and they all were. And I know i'm gonna be called a lamer-gamer cuz i didn't include Bartz and Cecil... markus lol.. they... ARE ALL GOOD. I LOVE FINAL FANTASY !!! I LOVE EVERYONE!! the greatest hero of them all though... in ALL ffs.. Aeonstarz lol. >_> just kidding...

I have two people I'd like to nominate for best hero, based on that criteria. Ramza Beoulve, Final Fantasy Tactics The Wanderer, Shadow of the Colossus Why Ramza? He's branded as a heretic, is blamed for the murder of several high-ranking government and papal officials, more or less loses all of his friends, his entire family dies due to manipulative plots to draw him out and kill him, and he pretty much ends up against the entire world, but he continues on his quest. Why? Because he knows the truth, and he wants the truth to be brought to light. He's honest, and dammit, when it's you versus the world, you deserve mad props. Why the Wanderer? He journeys to a forsaken land where mortals should not tread, and in doing so is caught in a quest to slay sixteen colossi, all to bring back the woman he loves. He does it all for love, no matter the odds. There, I'm done.

I've gotta pick Link.
The legend of Zelda, Zelda II, and the one for the Super Nes were the ones I played, never really got into the Occarina, hated the controller.
Link didn't need to pick up 30 other characters to get the job done, he went and kicked a whole world's ass on his own.
And what about Mario?
Anyone remember the original super mario bros? The dude saved 7 other women before finally finding the princess. By damsel #4, my scenario would have been:
<Damsel> Thank you Tarick! But the princess is in another castle! <Tarick> That's ok, you'll do.

Thats a toughy. Obviously Cloud, and I know I'll get alot of disagreement, but Squall. Squall was the perfect Introvert/Extrovert. He was confused, and scared, just wanted to be left alone to figure himself out, but was forced by this amazing group of characters to act. Just really made me feel for the guy. He alone made me really connect to FFVIII.

You should also throw on a Favorite "Extra" character. whether it be love interest, extra person etc.
ie : Vincent... just awesome. Rinoa, all time favorite love interest in an FF series, so cute ^^ The cat in Lunar (the little winged cat thing?) can't remember its name, but the chick that voiced her on SSSC was hot ^^
Anyway, just a thought ^

I have to disagree with Cloud, but I'll agree on Squall entirely. The only thing I didn't like about him was his propensity to respond to the simplest of questions with silence.
Random guy: "Hey Squall, how you feelin'?" Squall: "..." RG: "You check out that one spot in the training grounds I told you about?" Squall: "..." RG: "Heard you went back there with Professor Trepe. You do anything?" Squall: "..." RG: "Right, right, wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more!" Squall: "..."
You get the point.

I'm definately behind the vote for Ramza... it's a crying shame that the translation marred what was an absolutely brilliant and totally engrossing plotline. Ramza is a king among other heroes in the "self sacrificing" category.
Has anyone even played through Vagrant Story? Why are there no nominations for Ashley!? I'd love to go on for ages about the Risk Breaker's adventure in the fallen city of LeĆ Monde, but sadly... it would involve ruining most of the game's breathtaking plot. Througout his mission, however... his loyalty to country, comrades, the persuit of truth and his values are challenged again and again... and like Ramza - he chooses to persue the truth even if it means leaving behind everything that he knows.
A nod's as good as a wink to a blind bat, eh!?

Well, I can't remember the characters actual name, nor was he particularly the hero of the game, but I have to vote for the Barbarian guy from Baldur's Gate I. The totally insane one who kept the mutant space hamster Boo.... I'll never forget the sound of his hamster-centric battle cry (even if I have forgotten the actual words).
Ooh, also have to add in Rayne from Bloodrayne. Not for any particularly good reason, but simply because she's the absolute sexiest hero ever.
That is all
