Honestly, that's a very valid point... which is why I decided to go back and edit it into my original post right after submitting it. Gear doesn't make the player, but when it comes to non-merit end-game activity - there's only so much you can do without the gear to back it up. Effectiveness in the end-game arena requires both.

My personal opinion is that you need both, but that skill matters more. You can spend 60 million on your gear, but it can't change anything if you suck at playing your job. On the other hand, you can be one of the best players on Titan, and if you don't have the gear to back it up, your talent is going unfulfilled.
The way I see it, good gear compliments a good player.
No matter how good a Red Mage you are in an exp setup, Gods or HNM mobs are a cut above your standard exp mobs. As a general rule of thumb, they are hardier, much more resistant to spells and status effects, and usually well above your individual level (and skill range.) In these circumstances, there are really no other ways to improve your efficiency against these mobs after you have capped your skills... except through equipment. Let's face it. No RDM is probably going to land enfeebles on gods consistantly without about 320+ enfeebling and HQ staves.

I wish I could rate you up twice within the same 24 hour period.
I carry 52 pieces of Red Mage gear with me to events and gods, even if I'm only outside healing. I do it because I like playing my job to the best of my ability, and I like being prepared for any eventuality. You can't possibly judge someone based upon equipment alone. You have absolutely no idea what that person has on the side.

Not like you guys care about the opinion of a newer member that never got the oppotunity to know you better, but for what it was worth, I looked up to both of you. I considered you model members, not just because of your committment, but because of your consideration for others. I really don't care who said what or did what, and I understand that in the end you both have reasons for leaving, and those reasons are not for me to know.
But all the same, I was hurt to hear that all three of you were leaving, especially Imoh and Bale who I 'looked up to' as SHs with a true dedication to helping others... showing up for events and taking the dirty jobs, when others wouldn't. I lost a lot of that respect, not because of the drama, and not because you quit the shell, but because it didn't have to let it end this way... there were alternatives, and you made the decision not to take advantage of them.
Why be worried about your point balance? I understand how much work and effort you've all put into helping others here, and I still have respect for that. But seriously. If you left the linkshell on good terms instead of pulling some kind of stunt, did you honestly think they would have just stripped you of all your efforts? I'm sure you could have worked something out.
If it wasn't about the points, was it about your friends? Who are your friends? Some of them will follow you, and it will be sad to see everyone parting ways... those people have friends, too. What about those people? I'm not saying you should stay in a place where you feel uncomfortable, but if you stay in the game for your friends, you need to learn what dedication to your friends really is before you just throw everything you helped build in EO away.
You didn't consider others, you copped out. Good luck to the three of you, wherever you go. I honestly wish you the best, but I will be careful where I place my trust from now on.

You will be missed... but we'll be waiting for you with open arms when you're ready to come back. Take care of yourself, first and foremost.

Your departure is shocking, but understood. I've been there, done that, and am currently going through a bit of that right now... regardless of where you end up, don't forget about your friends here. Best of luck to you, Imoh...

A quick update, as this is the first chance I've gotten to sit down at a computer with online capability... the moving process is moving, albeit slowly, and I'm settled in Tampa, FL. I should be appearing back online again around the second week of August, putting it a little later than I had originally anticipated... but I look forward to seeing you guys again soon.
'Till then, take care - I'll be looking forward to the numerous "welcome home" presents and "special favors" awaiting me back at my mog-house.

Sorry to revive an old thread, however it seemed more appropriate than creating a new one in this case. This is basically just a status update, so replies are neither expected nor necessary. The time has finally come, and my move is upon me. I do not know when I will be back, primarily due to the fact I don't actually have anywhere to stay permanantly as of this time, however I will be looking forward to returning as soon as possible after establishing myself in Florida. I will probably be on tommorrow for a very short ammount of time (still lots of packing/cleaning to do,) but will most likely not be on from that point on, barring perhaps to say my goodbyes to people. I do plan on coming back to the orphans as soon as I'm able to settle down and get internet access set-up, but late July seems the earliest this will be possible. I'm looking foward to seeing you guys again soon. Take care, (and Tempus, you'll have to work overtime to keep the LS as raunchy as it was before my absence, though I suspect sky will give you some help. )

Well, as usual, life sucks... and a recent turn of events will force me to start looking for a job tommorrow. No, I'm not being fired. I'm a hard worker and I take pride in what I do, even if I hate doing it. Transportation issues have arisen, and to put it as simply as I can, I have been royally fucked over by the people I live with and am now required to find a job that is within walking distance.
Saving up enough money to afford the upcoming move (in barely more than a month now) has now become a seemingly impossible affair, and I will probably not have time to log in from this point on, due to the overwhelming number of overtime hours I'm going to have to put in doing a fucking menial job like bagging groceries to make ends meet for the next four weeks. To be frankly honest, FFXI and internet service for another month is just another expense (about $60) that I just can't afford right now, and I will not be renewing either service.
I hope to see you guys again when everything clears out... I'm not done yet, and I have every intention of coming back to the game when I'm able to.
Sorry for the double-drama post, I wish you guys the best.
