It kinda depends on how you define successful. Once you've leveled to 70, farmed dungeons for gear to get you raid-ready, and farmed up enough gold to be relatively comfortable, you don't need to spend much time at all to be successful for a raiding standpoint. You just need to be online for the raids themselves and then maybe spend an hour or two before/after the raid doing daily quests to get enough gold to fund your next foray into raiding.
Once you get to the point where you have everything you need outside of raid instances, your only expenses will be repair bills for your gear, restocking consumables (food, potions, elixirs, etc) and then you'll need money to buy gems/enchants/armor kits/etc for when you get a new piece of gear. Doing an hour or two worth of daily quests every few days should be plenty to fund raiding if that's all you're doing at endgame.
I can't imagine anyone being anything more than a very casual raider @ only 6 hours a week though.
Getting to endgame and then getting raid-ready is a bit of a timesink though. 6 hours a week would take you forever to get to the point where you are self-sufficient.

I havent played wow in liek 2years. lol Define success? EO is in BT atm with the expansion looming. On one hand not to shabby for a bunch of newbs who were level 1 at the launch of BC... But in the grand scheme of things, there are a ton of guilds in Sunwell. If you plan on starting from scratch you do have a long road ahead of you. If you already have a 70 toon, it won't be so bad. You can play 6 hours a week if you're already all caught up and just raiding 2 times a week... Somehow I don't think you're friend is doing much raiding with 6 hours play time in a week. Idk, must be running Kara/ZA or T4 content? Or they have it -all- on farm. Idk... 5% of the gaming population falls into this category with like maybe 20% of raiders, I'm just guessing, bottom line is not many people have the luxury of being in a guild that have everything on farm and get it done in 6 hours... To answer your question, if you are starting out as level 1, you'd have to play as much as you can. If you're 70, I guess it depends how fast you want to hit 80? Idk... I'd say like 20 hours minimum a week to be able to have any impact in any guild.

I have to be honest with you, while I agree with most of what Grim said, I also think being a casual raider with 6 hours a week is extremely optimistic.
As he said, farming gear to get started with the lowest tier raids is not particularly difficult, and the good news is that most of it can be stretched across several play sessions and doesn't require anything like the heavy camping or farming that was involved in FFXI. Some classes will spend significantly longer preparing than others, however. For example - if you plan on casual raiding on Paladin, you are pretty much locked into playing Holy. Gathering gear for a tankable Protection spec takes a fair bit of effort more than building a holy set, but could still be done on 6 hours a week. Farming a set for a Retribution Paladin raiding as a casual player would be virtually impossible because of the quality of gear required and the means of getting it.
The actual raiding itself is another problem. The average raid you participate in will take approximately four hours, from gathering time to finishing time. Even Kara can take this long, unless your group is seriously overgeared and just blazing through the whole thing. Farming gold for repairs and other minor costs would realistically take the other 2 hours of your projected budget, but would be very easy to do with daily quests.
The problem is that, again, some classes will be significantly more of a time sink than others. Having less gear means more compensation through consumables and raid buffs - especially for healers. I've easily gone through my entire raiding budget in potions in a single night when I was attending my first ZA runs, because I just didn't have the gear to keep up yet. That means a lot more farming, even if you can make the materials themselves. Other classes have different considerations; Warlocks, for example, are expected to have a large stockpile of shards before showing up. The plus side is you can do this while completing most of the repeatable quests you'll do for money.
The question you need to ask yourself is - are you willing to pass on most of the things you'll want to do outside of raiding in order to raid once a week? If the answer is yes - then you can and will be able to raid casually without any real problems. If the answer is no and you want to branch out into other activities, then the reality is you're going to be too spread out to accomplish much.
