lol kinda looks like them...but graphics are pimp. I never played the other SO games though. SO1 wasn't released here, it was one of the most difficult and last (big) RPG's for the SNES to be fan-translated. Had some weird chips in the cart or something, and a lot of dialogue. I never played. SO2 for PS1 was a pretty cool game, although it had its flaws. For its time it had a ton of depth for an RPG. Excellent replayability due to the different character choices and relationships. Also had a 3D Grandia type battle system instead of the traditional FF battle screen, which added a nice touch and kept things exciting. Claude and Rena are two of the most memorable RPG characters, and SO2's music I'd consider probably second only to the Xenogears OST. SO3 was for PS2. I got to the end of the first disc, but tried to play during my hardcore FFXI days. It didn't work out, and I never finished. Got decent reviews, but I don't think it was as embraced as SO2. I'll probably play SO4 for sure, depending how much I'm playing MMO's.

yah SO1 wasnt too bad, it was pretty close to SO2 graphics wise, and actually had plenty of voices. SO2 was definitely a classic rpg to play. SO3 was kinda ho hum really. I beat the game, and it jus really wasnt that special

S01 and SO2 are being re-released on the PSP on a single UMD. I might have to pick that up when it comes out.

That looks...breathtaking, wow.
Star Ocean 2 is still to this day my 3rd favorite game. Star Ocean 3 left a lot to be desired (for me atleast).

Star Ocean has always had kind of a cult following with western gamers. Personally, I didn't get into it until Star Ocean 3. I did play it all the way through, and greatly enjoyed it, but it had a number of major issues which prevented it from being everything it should have.
Most notably were the horrendous game balance issues and absolutely pants-on-head retarded plot twists that get tacked on near the beginning of the second disc. I won't bother ruining anything for anyone who's yet to play it, because it is worth playing, but go into it with the expectation that you're going to be let down by the story. It sets up a fantastic precedence that it just can't deliver on.
The balance issues were quite severe. The difficulty curve was all over the map, and the easily exploitable crafting system made it rediculously easy to make your characters so powerful that you could simply breeze through 15 hours of future gameplay one-shotting monsters and bosses... only to end up dying in less than 10 seconds against a boss in the next dungeon.
If you can stomache all of that, however, the game is a lot of fun to play and explore. I won't go so far as to say I have really high expectations for SO4, but it certainly looks promising.

So I bought the game and I'm still undecided on how I feel. I'm about 2 hours in or so.
First off...the graphics are horrible....almost sub HD according to the resolution. (900 x 510 native) Its the lowest resolution for a 360 game ever developed.
Secondly...It took 40 minutes of cutscenes...story lines....and cheesy dialogue before I got to my very first fight.
Now that I'm in a general area and can free roam into fights....I'm finding it more enjoyable...but I barely made it through the first 30 min. And I swear to god if they dont' find a way to compress multi-language on Xbox 360 disks I'm going to scream. Horrible horrible English voice actors in most of these JRPG games. Give me Japanese please.
The good side....is there seems to be an infinite amount of growing in this game. So many things can take you way from the actual game itself. The crafting, affinities, skill learning...just endless.

EW! I can't stand that about localized RPGs. Persona 3 & 4 (ps2 localized by Atlus) and Tales of Vesperia (bandai namco) are the only RPGs in recent memory where I actually ENJOYED the english voices. yipee, i think axia is going to buy this today. /worthlesspost off

The graphics are rough....a different kind of bad as the last remnant...but on pretty equal grounds of shittness. The cutscenes and stuff are awesome...and there are many...
I'm finding the amount of alterations and crafting and leveling up and skills and battle skills to be intimidating....just infinite changes can be made...and this might be what saves the game for me.

I <3 the star ocean series... But I'm having a little trouble getting into SO4.
My main issue is the emo childish sobbing rants the main char (and some of the other chars) go on every so often. Not only is it overly corny, but it's annoying enough to just skip over. And quite frankly the battle system is not enough to carry this game without the story.
The graphics look quite good to me, although there seems to be an issue with the gamma that makes everything in the game look either too bright or too dark. I've read up on it and it seems that changing the tv's vid settings might fix it, but I broke the remote for my TV QQ.
