Hurricane Ophelia has finally left the current vicinity, but is still sitting just up the coast from my place. Power came back on this morning, and my neighborhood had some minor flooding, but on the whole everything turned out just fine.
Ophelia peaked out at about 7 mph, and has to be the slowest hurricane I'll likely ever see. We're now in the diminished outer bands, and as of this morning will have been under it for 30? hours. Thankfully we do have one of the widest rivers here so any storm surge is spread over a large square mileage that encompasses mostly uninhabited military reserve.
I'm pretty sure Ophelia's Eye never touched land, but the hurricane force winds extending from the eye were prevelant all across the coastline. Damage thus far is extremely light on the mainland. The outer banks for us are still under Ophelia's pressure, and I can only hope things are going ok for them. Ophelia's slowed down to 3 mph at the moment so hopefully she'll put the pedal to the metal sometime soon.
My sympathy goes out to the victims of Katrina.
