It turns out it's a fantastic game. It's not groundbreaking, like Melee was... but it's a good extension of Melee.
They made a few welcome changes to the game engine, though I'm sad to see a lot of my favorite stages go. All of the characters seem pretty well balanced, and they made some subtle but effective changes to a lot of the characters that were all clones previously to help mix it up.
Ike is perhaps the best example. A lot of people view him as "replacing" Roy from Melee, but in reality he's a totally new character. He's MUCH heavier than Roy, with a stronger punch to match... and his move set has been completely changed to include some startling new abilities that make him tricky to use, but very dangerous.
More than anything, Brawl introduced some character concepts that play radically differently than any other existing character. Snake and Pokemon Trainer are probably the two best examples. Snake relies on always staying a step ahead of the opponent, planting traps everywhere and forcing them to take damage with clever tactics. He's slow, and his smash attacks are useless if not perfectly timed, but a good Snake player will be very effective against even faster characters.
Pokemon Trainer is the man for every situation. You essentially have three movesets at your disposal... and while some of them aren't well balanced with other characters (Ivysaur is pretty useless except in very specific situations) all of them together make you a powerful opponent with the ability to completely switch strategies mid-match.
I'm not a huge fan of all of the cheap-shot instant kill items they put in the game, but the focus seemed to be on making it a better party game and the items are a lot of fun to use with friends.
The only complaint I have, really, is the fact that Nintendo totally botched the online play aspect, which was the single thing I think most Melee veterans were looking forward to. As usual on a Nintendo console, you can only set match options with Registered friends by using Friend Codes. You can ONLY play random 2 minute timed matches against strangers, and you can't even see who you're playing because it strips their name online. None of the fun or useful co-op options are available online, they're local multiplayer only... which, in my opinion, is the biggest travesty. The multiplayer support was already there; was there some reason they felt you shouldn't be able to do it with a friend online?
One last note; there is ZERO voice support in the game. If you were hoping to trash talk with your friends while you play, you will be severely let down.
All in all, it's a great game and a good extension of the franchise, but they missed the boat on a lot of aspects that are really quite mediocre, when it had the potential to be one of the greatest games ever made.

Yeah, it came out like 3 weeks ago. It's a good game, just not up to the hype. If you haven't played it yet, you should be playing Super Mario Galaxy instead.
