I am going to be in the market for a note book soon. I was wonderin if any of the pc geeks out there have any good websites you use to purchase pc shit and if you have any good links to information about the technology. There are so many processors and chipsets for notebooks I'm not sure which is best suited for what I want so Id like to do some research.
Thank you

Peruse these forums at your leisure. They're jam packed with information, benchmarks, reviews, and technology discussions about all of the name brand laptops out there. They even have online coupon postings. www.notebookforums.com/

I recommend the XPS M170, or whatever.
I have a Dell Inspiron XPS Generation 2- this is basically the M170 before they went to their "M" class designations. And it has only a GFgo 6800 ultra in it, but otherwise I basically have an Identical machine (is super jealous of the new vid cards the M170s have, but i don't have 500 bucks to replace my 6800 ultra by myself)

Depends what you want. If you're gonna buy a notebook, might as well get a good one.
Little multimedia features are really handy. -TV Out -Pen Pad Screen is nice for taking notes in school.
If it's just for Microsoft word, Internet Explorer, well about any new notebook you can find can run those no problem. If you want to play FFXI on it, go look at some websites, see what graphic's cards they have, and do a google search on the graphics card.

I need a high powered affordable machine. Um, for what? Saying "High-powered" and "affordable" is pretty vague and it points you in opposite directions. What programs you gonna run ect? How much power do you need, what are you looking to spend? Is this for school/work? Are there certain programs that your professor/boss recommends you be able to run? Check out the specs of the programs you want to run then.... Just hop on a website like dell and start poking around. www1.us.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/notebooks?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhsCan't give you any advice w/o any specifics, other than make certain you have TV out lol, that's always convenient.

I think i found what Im looking for. Just gotta shop around now. I found a great site. www.notebookreviews.comHas lots of good reviews. I need a 2 ghz machine atleast. With 2 GB's of ram. 100 GB HD. Big screen...17 " prefered. A video card that is good, least 512 mb on it. My biggest question is which mobile processor is the best for video/gaming/graphics.? I will be using for leisure, and school. I use Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, 3d Studio Max, and a few others. I just dont want to may an arm and a leg. I found a good coupon for Dell, but I'm not sold on Dells just yet.

For the specific uses you cite, that will be enough and more than what you need. Playing FFXI on it should be an option, take note however that the game seems to rely much more heavily on processor speed than graphics adaptor (which in the case of a notebook, is probably a good thing anyway.) 2 GB of ram is overkill for your standard applications unless you're looking at running high end games on it. 2ghz processor is more than enough to run all of the programs on it, but even for a laptop, that's slightly behind by today's standards... so if you're looking for a book you may not have to potentially replace, you might reconsider on that aspect. 100gb hard disk space isn't huge, but it's about as good as it gets on a laptop without toting an external hard drive around. Consider looking at a machine with DVD burning capacity if you're willing to pay the money, if you plan on using it for media it will be a lifesaver.
How do you plan on connecting to the internet? Do you have a wireless hotspot at your dorm/campus facility? If so, you may think about investing in a wireless network card. They can prove to be very useful, and if you're already running a wireless network at home, this should be a given.
You seem more concerned with functionality than upgradability or gaming use, so you should probably consider getting the best "workhorse" laptop as cheap as you can, and then spend the extra money on things that will make it more practical, like wireless networoking. My two cents.

Ill have wireless and ethernet. 1 for perusing and 1 for gaming. The machine im lookin at will be more than enough for FF. Upgradabilty is something I dont usually bother with less its a cheap upgrade. I usually spend my money now to get something I can use for 4 years w/o upgrading. Then just get something new again.
