RAWRRRRRR!!! FINAL FANTASY LEGEND IS NOT A !@#*'N FINAL FANTASY GAME!!
It was released in Japan as Makai Toushi SaGa, and the only reason the name was changed was as an 11th hour localization/marketing decision to borrow the name from the Final Fantasy franchise in hopes of boosting its sales since the SaGa series was relatively unknown within the US.

LMFAO yeah when i saw spirits within as a great game well... it didnt hit me right away. Then i decided what the hell, i'll vote for FF7 since i love it so much. Screen comes up saying "thank you for voting for teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as the greated final Fantasy game ever!"... yeah, you suck and i hate you. =P

Sosa I very highly doubt that they thought fflegend on gameboy was a true part of the ff series
Rather, they were using it as a subtle clue to the fact that they were pulling an april fool's joke. I.E.- those hardcore fans out there will know that this isn't a final fantasy game, so why on earth did they............ wait a minute they're yanking my chain.
I think the cruelest joke is that they listed ffviii on there twice
