This is old news, but here is my take on the situation.
SONY thought they would be smart and turn off the "Other Operating System" option a few months ago, to cut costs. Basically this option let you install Linux on your PS3 and let you use the system as a Linux computer.
There was no good reason to turn this option off, and tens of thousands of people were using this feature. For a lot of people, this is the equivalent of buying a PC to use Windows, and then having your PC manufacturer tell you, two years later, you can't use Windows on it anymore.
Because of this, a hacker jail broke the ps3 and published an encryption key that let you bypass the PS3 copyright protection. So SONY again was smart and went after the hacker (geohot), taking all his computers and such as part of the subpoena process. They settled and the guy didn't get in trouble because he didn't do anything illegal. In the process of suing Geohot, SONY ****ed off an entire hacker community.
Sure enough, last week PSN was hacked, and the data breech included information about 80 million subscribers (usernames, passwords, birth dates and most likely credit card info).
As a PSN subscriber, I'm not very happy about this. I don't really care that the network has been down a week, but the fact all my personal info could be posted on line, linking my gaming ID to my personal identity, which includes my personal security questions, birth date, and my credit card number - that's very unsettling.
Here's a big "**** you", SONY. You treat your consumers like **** and take features away for no good reason except cost cutting, **** off the hacker community trying to clean up, and now 80 million people have been screwed in the process.
And now your stock is down from $37/share to 28 - you've lost 25% of your value over this, and the problems haven't even started.
****ing idiots.

yeah I read about this the other day, pretty terrible for Sony. They knew what was happening too and tried to brush it off like they were doing Maintenance.

I agree that Sony shouldn't have removed the other operating system option. You don't give your customers something and then take it away. It's bad business and bad customer service. I'm not running Linux. I don't hack. I don't cheat. I don't participate in any of that. So as far as Geohot and the other hackers go, fuck 'em. I guess it's selfish and self centered but it's also my right... I assume that the entire hacker community that you refer to is Anonymous? Anonymous has denied any involvement with the recent troubles that the PSN has been experiencing. It could be a rogue group of Anonymous members... *shrug* www.ps3blog.net/2011/04/22/anonymous-we-didnt-do-it/As far as the data breach goes. I'm certainly not happy about this. But I'm not too worried... Maybe I'm just not informed enough on the subject to be aware of how serious it is. But I figure the chances of me being targeted by a hacker is very low. Out of those 80 million subscribers many of them must be 6 figure plus people... Juicier targets. I guess someone could try and steal my identity, that would suck giraffe genitals. I definitely expect more from Sony... It's unacceptable and I understand why you and so many others are up in arms... On the same subject: "major American banks have stated that they have no awareness of a mass breach of credit information."How much will this cost Sony?Quite a few articles up over at PS3Blog.net I enjoy this site a great deal. It's not run my Sony and you are allowed express yourself. Just as long as you don't exaggerate, they won't nuke any kind of anti PS3 posts. @jon, according to Sony (take it for what you will), at first they realized that their was an issue. Then they realized the severity of the issue in the days that followed. So according to them, they notified their customers as soon as they knew. I for one... Really want to play some KZ3 lol ;D EDIT: Spelling and forgotten words... Sleepy!

I'm running Linux. I don't hack. I don't cheat. You can't run Linux on your PS3 anymore and use PSN unless you hack your PS3. Did you mean you aren't running Linux on your PS3? I assume that the entire hacker community that you refer to is Anonymous? Anonymous has denied any involvement I don't know much about the different hacking groups. I do know the group that supports geohot are ethical hackers (not pirates or in it for the money) and they are incredibly knowledgeable people. They are more computer scientists than hackers. I think this job was way beyond Anon's capabilities. I think Anon is mostly script kiddies and a few people who have access to botnets, but I don't know for sure. They can do damage, but I don't see them breaking into corporate networks and stealing customer data. When geohot jailbroke the system, Sony may have fired some of their security people. If so, they could have left some backdoors open on the way out. They would probably get caught, though. If it was an outside job, this type of heist was orchestrated by the elite and those people are way too smart to get caught. As far as the data breach goes. I'm certainly not happy about this. But I'm not too worried...I figure the chances of me being targeted by a hacker is very low. I think the people who did this were out to hurt Sony and not interested in financial gain. So they might never do anything with our personal info. Or they could post it on the internet, give it to wikileaks, sell it to identity fraud thieves, spammers, or whoever. It seems like they didn't get the credit card data, but even if they did, my card on record is expired so I don't care. The potential for bad shit to happen is there, but IMO probably nothing will. I'm not worried about it, just annoyed at Sony for bringing this on themselves. $320/record or 25 billion? There's no such thing as a 25 billion dollar job. They will probably spend a million cleaning up and investigating, and could be fined millions of dollars. To suggest they're going to pay a security firm 25 billion is ridiculous.

TheAnonPress sounds pretty radical, although I doubt they are behind it. There is no way someone is stupid enough to go public.

Yea, I edited my original post, I forgot the word "not". I'm not running Linux hehe. You were probably already in the process of responding. My bad.
It would be entertaining to find out who did this and how... I guess in some ways, this is the biggest "heist" the internet has ever seen. Someone, somewhere may feel the need to brag about it...
I'm annoyed too... I view my PS3 kind of like my home team. A home team that I chose. I want to see them do well because it benefits me and for the bragging rights lol
/poke Nauren and Sosa. I know you guys have opinions on this!

Someone asked if the PSN issue is making me consider the 360. My response:
No, I will never support Microsoft in the console business, unless they are the only choice. But all of this has me anticipating Nintendo's next release. Dropping 'Other OS' and then going after geohot most likely motivated the PSN intruders, and Sony got what they deserved for being a bunch of jackasses in my opinion.
The fact they have to rebuild PSN just shows it was broken to begin with, which is unbelievable given they've been working on this for five years. Developers count on PSN being up for their revenue streams, and need that money to pay the people who make games. This isn't going to be forgotten any time soon.
I don't understand how a company as big as Sony has made so many mistakes and has fallen so far behind the curve when it comes to innovation. They completely failed with mp3 players (?) and smart phones ($800 xperia and pureness), and their tablet isn't due until the end of this year (and will probably cost 2-3x more than the competition and fail).
The PS2 was released in 2000. Sony has had 11 years to work on the PS3 and they say "it's not even half finished". They haven't even begun talking about the PS4 (allegedly). Again, I just don't get how a company with so many resources is constantly falling behind. I think arrogance has a lot to do with it, but just don't get how Sony has any room for it in this day and age. Especially given the psx (PlayStation 1) was founded on Nintendo's arrogance.
It looks like Nintendo might be serious about getting back into real gaming; the rumored Wii 2 specs allegedly blow the ps3 away. If Nintendo is going to target the primary gaming demographic again, and not just kids and old people, I will definitely consider a switch.

Yea, I can't wait to see what Nintendo is working on... I really hope that they stop making consoles and games for kiddies! Makes me crazy. That is my original "home team" and it's what I grew up playing. Pisses me off to see them wander so off the path of what I think gaming should be.
I'm not a Microsoft fan either. Pretty sure my next PC will be a Mac.
