I've never played a Persona game. Grabbed the demo...it seemed kind of cheesy.
I might pick it up after the price drops. If I'm going to buy a newer title right now, I'll probably go for Infamous 2 or Dragon Age 2 - games I know I will enjoy.

I didn't enjoy the demo either. So I'm going to have to pass on this. They have a few good ideas but it just seems like it's mainly a puzzle game. Not my style really.

Eh yeah the puzzle aspect of the game is certainly not my favorite thing as puzzles aren't typically my style, but the story and execution is really fresh and interesting. It's really more of a horror/drama a la Heavy Rain. I don't understand why they made the puzzles the way they did too, it's mercilessly difficult sometimes. I can't really say that I'm disappointed though because Atlus always does a solid job of localizing everything. I'm almost done with my first play through, but I still wish they had made it an RPG or at least a little more action oriented. The puzzles are fun but... I dunno... they're puzzles.

It looks amazing and the demo really did have a slick style and I liked it, but I refuse to play Atlus games again after Demon's Souls.

I can't seem to progress in Demon's Souls either. I may pick up a guide and play it that way.
I enjoyed many things about Catherine except for the puzzles. The puzzles are a major part of the game so it turned me off. I was very interested in the story though. I could related to the main character.

Does it have Lines of Death like UO? I wouldn't consider Demon Souls brutally hard but I would consider it to be, at most, extremely infuriating to play. What makes it so infuriating is the punishment that gets handed down to you whenever you die and you should expect to die early and die often. Once you accept that fact the game becomes slightly less infuriating. When you die you lose all of the souls, which is basically the currency in that game, that you have accumulated up to that point. On top of that you also have your max health capped at half of it's maximum amount. To make matters even worse you can only take a handful of hits before you die even when you are at full health. When you do take damage it is because you screwed up your positioning or because your timing is off so it's not like you can blame the computer for cheating or being bugged, it's just that it's very unforgiving if you screw up.

When you do take damage it is because you screwed up your positioning or because your timing is off so it's not like you can blame the computer for cheating or being bugged, it's just that it's very unforgiving if you screw up. In addition to that, when you do die, you're left as a ghost and the only way to get back to living status and restore your heath to it's max capacity is to kill a boss, which is a difficult task even at full health, or to use a particular consumable item, which happened to be very rare and in limited supply making it less of an option. You basically have to know exactly what it is you need to do for every encounter before you go to it and execute on it perfectly or suffer a huge penalty for screwing up. To make matters worse, before they took the servers for it down, it was persistently online and there was a chance you could randomly get other high level people to hop into your game and grief you. Fuck Atlus. I can get behind games that are difficult, but it's a fine line on how that difficulty is presented. Super Meat Boy is also an insanely difficult game, but instead of punishing you so harsly for dying, you respawn almost immediately and your goal is almost always in sight. Sure, it's brutally difficult, but the sense of accomplishment for beating every dark world level on HELL with A+ ratings is all the more sweeter for it. With Demon's Souls, the game just feels like it expects you to be perfect right out the gate and makes you suffer in spectacular fashion for slipping up.

To make matters worse, before they took the servers for it down, it was persistently online and there was a chance you could randomly get other high level people to hop into your game and grief you. This was definitely a big pain in the ass. I had it happen to me once and only once, shortly after I killed a boss of course so I was at max health. The guy came in completely decked out in some ridiculous looking armor. I thought I was alright because I was close to the portal to get out but it was disabled. At that point I just gave up and let him kill me because it was a losing battle. From then on whenever I fired up Demon's Souls I always disabled my wireless adapter on my PS3 so I didn't have to deal with it. And even with all of the points that Lyon and I have made about Demon's Souls it comes down to the fact that you really have to play it be able to fully understand how infuriating it really can be. Once you play it for a little while you will either be able to appreciate it for being a difficult game and find entertainment in it or you will find that it's punishment for failing is too severe and you won't enjoy it.
