Developers have found a way to help combat the loss of sales due to trading, renting, buying used games.
Now many games are starting to come with a one time use code that allows the original owner to access the multiplayer part of the game (or some other features). If you rent, borrow or buy the game used, you can not access these features without paying the basic price which seems to be around $10.00.
Madden does this already, so does Mass Effect. EA has stated all future games will be using this and so had THQ. Activision/Treyarch are interested in using this for Modern Warfare games as well.

I dont mind it. If it keeps the gaming buisness alive and combats piracy good for them.

EA pisses me off.
1 - Ran Ultima Online into the ground. Imagine if Thrall was controlled by a real person; an actor? Imagine player housing? Imagine class balanced PvP? Seriously, UO had so many good ideas... How did they fuck it up so bad or just give up on it...
2 - Madden. Lacks inspiration in general for quite a few years. They AREN't putting in the same time and effort imo...
It's a loss of sales but not really a loss of profit imo... If I'm buying a used game, I'm buying it because of the price. All of the games that I really want, I pay for full price. Now I have to consider if I want to pay the 10$.
What they are losing imo is public opinion, free press, etc... This may result in less people getting their hands on certain games. Idk, if owned a video game company and as long as we aren't in danger of bankruptcy, I want as many people as possible to be able to play my games and get the full experience. That's how you get future, full price paying customers.
I guess the market has changed too much. They rather take the guaranteed 10$ because there are just soooo many games out there now.
