As to the uphill struggle with the extended warranty
i talked around with Dell and got forwarded to a bunch of different people, then finally hit a dead end as some dumb bitch from warranty took my case at face value and forwarded me to spare parts sale department. (she basically saw that my warranty on their records didn't have accidental damage coverage- basically that's the whole problem... their records are wrong. some dumbass hit a delete key somewhere and got rid of my coverage that I paid for). From spare parts they said i had hit the end of the road, but gave me the dell customer care number and an extension to dial.
so i did that, and got in touch with a really nice man who promised that he would resolve my issue, no more forwarding around departments in circles.
He asked me to forward my old laptop confirmation and acknowledgement emails to him- so i did. He said he's call me back when he got em.
I got a call back from his supervisor- he said yeah we got your emails and it's clearly marked that you purchased accidental damage coverage. We're sorry. We'll get it fixed on our system. We've got to talk to a bunch of people, but call back in a couple of hours and the problem will be straigthened out- from there you can resolve your laptop's issues and get repair or a replacement unit.
i said, ok ty very much. Hung up, went to lunch, bought some beer, and am gonna play all day on snow's computer. Gonna call them later.
As to taking out the HD and backing it up- I completely feel comfortable doing that kind of comp work- even on a laptop. Yet, it'd be difficutl to do here, because we only have laptops up here in Boston that are in working condition- and i'd rather do this backup work on a desktop IDE drive or usb drive. I'm less comfortable with HD backup to another laptop HD.
