/sigh.
broken's computer got coffee spilled on it today during class. let's just say that ffxi isn't exactly his main concern now that his computer is inoperable. his notes, his outlines, everything is on this computer. so that being said, either just one of us or both of us will be out of the game until he gets it fixed. it won't even start. send him your love and prayers, he's pretty pissed. (he's not the one who spilled the coffee.... some other dude did it ><). we'll be back asap.

ewwww. I had beer spilled in my old Dell cough*Code*cough. Lets say I had a very expensive paper weight. They refused to fix it because it was something I caused and warrenty wouldn't cover it. They wanted 4/5 the cost of the laptop to fix it so I gave it to a friend and told him have fun taking laptops apart.
eh..and just noticed it was the Dell....sorry

is it a desktop or a notebook? if it´s a desktop and it only hit the mother board u can try cleaning it up with waterfree alcohol (isopropilic or w/e it´s spelled like in english), or the other parts the coffee hit... and if it didn´t hit the hd, he can still save the data on another computer before he sends it to be repaired, people have the nasty habbit of formating hds when u send them to be repaired I once had a problem due sea breeze in my house, there were clusters of salt on my mobo, I washed the whole thing it with water and soap and the next day it was up and running (video card, sound card, ram and everything but hds inclueded lol), that was one year ago too lol and it´s still running, but I wouldn´t recommend it, alcohol is better if it´s a notebook and he´s a brave man, he can still do it, notebooks are just harder to open, but I´ve opened both mines, cleaned and closed and they´re still running up to today oh btw, allow it at least one day to dry up, I was anxious to see if mine was working and almost fucked mine up cause it was still wet

Oh crap. Sorry Broken. ; ; I hope the guy who spilled the coffee is going to pay for the repairs. All that hard work. Well, maybe you can fix it like Aerya said. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Good luck.

well, it's a laptop, and he was smart to purchase the extended accidental damage warranty - which does cover spills, thank god. see, when you take this thing around with you every where you go, it's good to have some sort of damage control in place, lol. but thanks for the info aerya, i'll show it to him when we get home. he's pretty pissed too. if we didn't have some sort of warranty going on, i'd make sure that fucker who spilled it paid for it. and yes, i can be an uber mega bitch when someone fucks with my husband. /sigh. i just feel badly for him because all of his notes and outlines are on his computer. and i'm not sure if you guys understand what that means in terms of law school.... your notes are your life. period. so yeah, we'll see if we can get it all extracted as part of the repair ><

So sorry Fly and Broken. ; ; It may be a good idea to back each other's notes and outlines up on the other person's computer, lol. You know at least one will be functional and if not then you know its a conspiracy and someone has a hit out on ya! I hope everything gets recovered and fixed very soon for the sake of school and, of course, the game.

Yeah, i was planning on doing some major backup work this weekend... oh the irony.
Here's the situation so far.
I've called Dell, i talked to their XPS specialized support team. I asked them what my warranty coverage is (knowing full well that i've purchased the complete care accidental damage warranty on top of my lap top's 3 year warranty- it covers spills, screen breaks, etc... for 3 years). They told me that their information doesn't reflect that I've bought that coverage. This coverage will let them repair and even replace the entire unit.
I say thank you very much, but i'm going home to get my receipts and will be calling you later today.
I hang up and check my original shipment confirmation email back from July when I purchased it.
what line do I see as part of the peripherals and package?
Verbatim: CompleteCare Accidental Damage (except NY and FL) SAVE 10 %! Add CompleteCare Accidental Damage Svc to 3Yr Lim Warranty
in other words, I BOUGHT YOUR DAMN WARRANTY BISHES. I DON"T KNOW WHAT FUCKING INDIAN POO DIVER FUCKED UP THAT ENTRY IN YOUR COMPUTER, BUT I DIDN"T PAY $200 FOR NOTHING YOU COCK GOBBLERS!
so now i have to go home, find that info on my receipt as well, and then call them and say you guys need to pull your collective thumbs out of your asses, and fix or replace my damn shiny paperweight NOW!
time to spend the rest of my day on the phone. i'll keep you guys updated

worst I ever did was spill a bowl of cereal on my keyboard. I'd be pissed if someone spilled stuff on my laptop. Notes, outlines, everything.. ugh.. If I lived near u guys, I'd let u use me as a punching bag Of if u guys lived near me, i'd let u use the punching bag in my garage. Aerya's idea is really good. You say the computer won't even start, so the coffee mite not have hit the hard drive, coulda hit something with the memory/ram. I really hope everything can be recovered. Edit: o.O WOWWWWWW!! That is 1 PISSED Taru! Glad u can get the thing replaced!!! But i'm still keepin my fingers crossed for ur notes.

if I were u I´ll try to remove the hd and backup before sending it in, there´s a very good chance u´ll lose all your info if u don´t notebooks hd are usually really easy to remove, both mines have a little lid screwed on the bottom of it that u can open and remove the hd what i do when mine gets messed up is I put the hd on my mp3 player and plug on the usb of a computer to fix it or repair

Just thank god it wasn't cream of mushroom soup. That shit gets EVERYWHERE if you spill it - the speakers, the monitor - the keyboard... you get the idea. And it streaks the monitor and reeks like HELL if you somehow manage to miss any when you're cleaning it up.
...not that I'm speaking from personal experience, of course. I'm bringing this up on behalf of my friend. You know.
BS - that sucks... I'm really sorry to hear about your problem. For what it's worth, I've been going through something kind of similar... got a new graphics card in, beautiful card - raw power. Minor problem - it doesn't work and causes major problems. Company admits it's a defective card from my observations, but I'm still waiting on them to give me instructions on how to get the replacement - and I leave country in less 36 hours. I hope you're able to clear this up soon... good call with the extended covery on your warranty - but rest assured this isn't just a problem with Dell... anything with 'accidental damage covery' usually involves an uphill struggle of some sort. Best wishes, take care of yourself and see you when I get back. ^^
Edit: They're TOTALLY right, by the way. If you're confident enough to do it yourself - remove the hard drive first and back up your data... otherwise - find someone you trust that can do this for you. If you send it into a shop, there is a VERY good chance they will format the drive if they start to have problems... sometimes even after you specify that you do NOT want the drive formatted without them first telling you. Depends on how reputable the venue is.
