For the poor graphics and problems of COH/COV, I still enjoyed the game, especially the character design. Do they still have the system of picking up Sidekicks like they did in the original?

Well, Open Beta has ended and there are two days left until the 'early start' program kicks in.
All in all, the game still needs a lot of work... but no more so than is typical for a new MMO release. Most of the things they need to work on, such as power balancing, content adjustment, hardware optimization and UI refinements, should be able to get tweaked without any major concern.
The only major problem I have with it right now is that they're going to need to take a good look at the way defensive powers work in the game right now. Currently, you can take and use ONE defensive slotted passive ability, and these abilities are mutually exclusive. Using them means you can't use an offensive ability instead, which usually focus on giving you more endurance for more pew pew... so it's not a terrible trade-off.
The actual strength of the passives is kind of wonky, though. Lightning Reflexes, in its current iteration, is utterly useless. In many cases, it's actually worse to take it than nothing at all due to the fact you could use that slot for an offensive power. Invulnerability and Regeneration are disproportionately strong to the other two remaining passives and all of this leads to PVP being dominated by 'turtle' builds that focus on just ignoring /self healing through damage.
That said, I'm looking forward to re-rolling my characters for a third... and hopefully last, time. Power Armor is an absolute blast, and does an excellent job of making you feel like a walking tank. Miniguns, micro-missiles, particle lasers... it's a lot of fun working the angles for optimal AoE damage while everything around you explodes.

It continues to have a few issues, but a lot of my previous issues have been addressed.
You can now retcon (respec) all[ character decisions, even back to level 1, however, doing so remains prohibitively expensive. Additionally, the game is much harder than it was previously due to some global changes in mob attack and player defense values. Personally, I've managed to solo all of the content up to level 30 that I've run across, including group quests, but a lot of casual players are calling foul.
Frankly, I feel the change was necessary. It was a fun game before, but the difficulty level was comatose if you managed to roll a character that was very defensive-oriented. It actually promotes character diversity since everything is roughly on the same level of effectiveness (which was the entire point) without penalizing people for choosing to specialize.
That said, it's still got a few rough edges to work out. Grouping and the interface are a little clunky right now, EXP rates and power balance are all being adjusted still. It's definately not a perfect game... but even after closed beta, I continue to have a blast playing it and it's the only MMO launch I've ever played (FFXI doesn't count, it was out for a year and a half before US release) that I've really thought I'd be in for the long haul.

All new games that have a chance of being good make you feel like you'll be playing them forever. But when you hit cap and the reality sinks in that there is nothing to do @ endgame yet you start re-think that.
Felt the same way with AoC, great game for the first 40 levels or so, after 40 it becomes a grind. Then you get to 80 and realize there's nothing there worth doing that's worth the montly price tag. Sure you can run instances and raids, but they're almost always pugs, and the gear almost doesnt even matter in AoC.
What kind of endgame does CO have planned or currently implemented?
