Got a nasty bug the other day that would destroy any antivirus or malware removal tool that I would try to install and use. Eventually ate up my HD and I had to re-install windows >.>

<3 how it took me 5 HD wipes to get XP SP3 installed. Thoug I suppose any trace of my secret taru porn stash, or that virus, are gone.

Thought I'd share my lovely experience. Now to re-install all my shit all over again >.>

If you ever get a virus that does not allow you to install anti-virus software the best thing to do is to boot up a Linux Live distribution via USB thumb drive then you can run deep search command line removal tools so you don't need to reformat your drive. If it took 5 HD wipes your best bet is that it was a worm and it crawled into your File table allocation which can be fixed from a live Linux USB thumb drive.

The suite of programs I use are as follows:

Ubuntu 10.04 USB Live Boot With ClamAV and AVG Command Line Scanner

Windows Programs:
Malwarebytes Pro
AVG Pro
Zone Alarm Professional Firewall
Spybot Search and Destroy

I would also google editing your host file to prevent website hijacking.

Another great tool is CCleaner which will dump all temp files included flash cookies which can contain viruses.

I would also recommend running in Windows command line: ipconfig /flushdns
after you finish browsing the web to make sure no one is tracking your DNS locations.
