This is similar to the AOL YTMD post a while ago.
So I got a letter in the mail about a week ago, from Time Magazine for a sweepstakes. I called in and signed up for the sweepstakes and have a 1/26,000,000 of winning.
When I signed up, they tried to give me some gifts and sell me some magazines with a "No Risk Trial for 90 Days". I thought I heard $16.99 on the phone for 6 months of subscriptions to 4 magazine titles, I would also be billed $30 some odd dollars every 6 months for a few years, and I could cancel at any time in the billing period. I agreed, and I got a bunch of News Magazines, along with Maxim.
Then 5 days later I saw a $69.99 charge to my card. I called the company up, was very polite and said I would like to cancel and receive a refund. She agreed to cancel subsequent billings.
Me:"1 Minute, Will I also be refunded my $69.99?"
Her:"We ask that you wait until you receive your first set of magazines before you cancel your account. You have a 90 day no-risk trial."
Me:"Well here's the deal, I really am not interested in spending $70 on magazines, so I would just like to be refunded and cancel my account."
Her:Well to lighten the financial burden, I am going to issue you $40 in gas coupons today. Also you are still entitled to your free gifts.
Me:I am really not interested in the gas coupons or the free gifts. Please cancel my account and issue a refund for the amount I have been billed.
Her:"Well we have already taken time to contact the publishers and since we have done with for you, we ask that you wait until you receive your first set of Magazines before canceling the account."
Me: "I am adamant that I do not want this service. Receiving the magazines will not change my mind. So I ask that you cancel my account, and refund the amount I have been billed today."
Her: "One minute Sir, I'll be right back..."
5 min later
Her:"Hello! We ask that you understand that we have already taken time to contact the publishers and that you wait until you receive your magazines before you cancel your account. You have a 90 day risk free trial. After you receive the magazines you can cancel at any time for any reason if you not fully satisfied."
Me:I have received the magazines and am not satisfied so I ask that you cancel my account and issue a refund for the amount I have been billed.
Her:SIr, you just created your account 4 days ago, you could not have yet received your magazines. We ask that you understand that we have already taken time to contact the publishers and that you wait until you receive your magazines before you cancel your account. You have a 90 day risk free trial. You can cancel at any time during your trial.
Me: Does the 90 day risk free trial begin when I create my account, or when I get my magazines?
Her: It begins when you create your account.
Me: Well being that I am within my 90 day free trial period, and I was of the understanding that I could cancel at any time during my free trial period, I am telling you that I want to cancel my free trial period today. So how about you cancel my account today and refund my money?
Her: "One minute Sir, I'll be right back..."
At this point I start loosing my patience. Freaking woman will not let me cancel my "free trial" during my "free trial period" which I was told that I could "cancel at any time". I then prepare what I am going to say when she gets back on the phone.
Prepared Phrase: I want a refund issued today and my account canceled. If you refuse to cancel my account today and do not issue a refund, I am calling my credit card company and informing them that you are not allowing me to cancel during my "free trial period" which I was told that I could "cancel at anytime" and that I want payment reversed since this amount is over $50. They will then give you a call, and you can explain to them why I am not being allowed to cancel during "my free trial period". You are asking me to wait, and I am telling you "no", I want my account cancelled and a refund issued today.
So I am all set to go and then:
Her: Sir you will be issued a refund within 3-5 business days and your account will be cancelled.
Me: Thank you very much and have a nice day.
Her: You too Sir!
I wish I had been tape recording this conversation. It was just too funny. If they ever call me up again, I am going to subscribe just to cancel a few days later with a tape recorder to the phone.
