Saw a similar thread elsewhere and it sounded like a fun idea. So lets hear where you got your inspiration for your character name.
Nikodemos: I knew I wanted to be a combat spec rogue, the character in the book series I steal my names from is a fighter whose nickname is 'stealth'. Basically a fighter with "ninja" tendancies.
Tempus: Way back in '92 when I first started playing games online, my original choice was too long (yeah they required short names), so I had to come up with something short. I had re-read the book series recently, so Tempus was born.
Both: Thieves World - its a dark fantasy anthology series started back in the 70's, has over a dozen books and they have recently started it back up again with a time shift (new stories set a couple decades after the originals). The premise is that authors can use other author's characters in their own stories as long as they dont kill them off or do something else major. If you insist on happy endings, these books arent for you. Otherwise I highly recomend them.

Grimgore (my Tauren Druid): Just one of those names that pop into your head. I wanted something 'feral' sounding, and thought Gore would do the trick. Then it was just a matter of figuring out how to incorporate it into a name w/o it sounding lame. The prefix Grim was something I had in my head from when I was trying to name my Warlock, so I just kinda put them together and liked the way they sounded. Grimgore.
Rottin (my UD Warlock): I wanted a name having something to do with being undead. I settled upon the name 'Rotten', but to my dismay it was already taken on our server. So I changed a letter. Simple as that.
Jasmira (my Nelf Druid): This was my first character ever in WoW, and I had absolutely no clue what to name her. I wanted something elven-sounding at the time, and to be honest 'Jasmira' came up on the random name generator at the character select screen. Thought it sounded okay and went with it.

The first online game I ever played was UO:Ultima Online Renaissance. My brothers and I played. We named all of our characters after Final Fantasy characters. Then we decided to give our characters a family name. We chose Kinneas, once again from Final Fantasy. All along we dreamed about there being a Final Fantasy MMO...
Then one day we hear of a Final Fantasy MMO! Unfortunately you could not name your character in FF after any character from a FF console game... So I didn't know what to do. I just decided to use my real name; Mark. I ended up deciding on Markus because it seemed a little more fitting...
Then we decided to make the jump to WoW. I am still trying to contact Markus... I am very proud of EO and what we accomplished in Final Fantasy on the Titan server. It really does tell like a novel or hollywood story. Ups and downs like a roller coaster... So since Markus was already taken... I decided on Titan. Since Titan was taken, I decided on Titanx.
To be honest, in game I hate it; Titanx. But in my mind it is Titan-X. Not the real Titan (a FF summon) but Titan-X, the Tauren Rawrior!

Well the name takes me the longest to come up with...Bedelia is the celtic goddess of fire and I love the holy fire a priest can throw...I am Irish so the celtic background appealed to me..hence..Bedelia..
Starcarbon.....I chose Starcarbon because it is what gives a star its brilliance and if you ever see a priest with her bubble on..well it is a radiant bubble....Starcarbon by Ellen Gilchrist is my favorite book too.

Lol well this should be fun for some of you who know me as Tork...
Tork: Back in the day when i first started playing FFXI I really didn't know what i wanted to name my newly created Galka... then during a restroom break at my job (super Target) i looked over and say the named Tork.... on a toilet paper dispenser.
Mekhi: Mekhi Phiffer... trying to find a name started looking through tv guide channel and name mekhi caught my eye so i tried it out and got it.
Balthazar: Three wisemen... back in the ffxi days my two irl friends moved to a server to get rid of some of the distractions so we could all level together and we got the name of the three wismen and i really dig this name.
Grylls: Bear Grylls.... hell yeah! Man vs. Wild on the discovery channel.
and a very long time ago when i played my very first MMO called Motor City Online (was a racing game and a hell of a lot of fun) my named was Red Kepler... opened up a phone book for that one.
I also have some other holder names. like Savini for an undead (guy who did make up FXs on the "of the dead" films), Hoborg (from a game called neverhood) and some other ones

The names were also used in Chrono Trigger as the three guys in control of time, I forget what they were called. Now I want to play CT.... My original D&D/Game name was Teros, but it was taken, so I altered it.

well, Asmodaeus-well he was a warlock so giving him a demon name was the right thing to do,after all its only fitting to name him after one of the strongest demons thier is. Asima, i always find humor in naming my "holy" men after things of great unholiness,so my priest was given a demons name,a very nasty demon too Scalu,my BE pally, was named after the god of darkness-from the Dark Sun D&D setting, again i find humor in odd things like this Niko i have read most of the Thieves World books, nice collection of short storys,my all time favorite names are Mon and Bazthic, classic D&D names for me,but Mon has to be a barbarain, and Bazthic has to be a fire dwarf mage, but such things are not in WoW,sigh

Not too original here: <real name>------> [www.chriswetherell.com/elf/]<-----Elvish Name Generator = Alatarial
Signet: that's just a play on my Ally Priest toon's name, Cygnet. and Twinkletoon, because, well, someday if I can ever stop buying crap in the AH (like bunnies) maybe she'll get some decent gear. You know = grow up and be a twink. >.<

Locke => Locke Cole, from FFVI JV => My initials (first and last name) My first screen name was LockeMasters (again, FFVI, and Masters from Ken Masters of Street Fighter II). But that lasted about a week because of the jokes I've been using LockeJV as my online handle since 1996.

Hmm... most of my characters are just names I've used for a long time in RPGs and D&D. Milara Silverlake was originally a wild elf ranger in a dungeons and dragons game. I later used the name for a ranger in Everquest. Then of course a rogue in WoW but dropping the surname since WoW hates surnames. One of the original Milara's defining character traits was her curious nature and wandering attention span. In case you're curious, the D&D Milara's pic: Nanaea D'Argosia was also originally a D&D character and later EQ character.before I imported the name into WoW. The original Nanaea was a human wizard prone to bouts of impishness... haha.Sometimes so far as a downright evil streak. In case you're curious, her picture: Let's see... Evelynn was, believe it or not, a random name generated. I was getting frustrated because every name I tried was rejected/taken/whatever. So I started generating names figuring I'd either see one I liked or get inspiration for a name. That one popped up, I tried it, it worked. End of story. haha Kaylline I think was about the 6th or so attempt to get the name Kaylee or a similar name... that name coming from Firefly/Serenity. Ariala I think was a random name too. P.S. In case there is some confusion, I did not draw either of the above pictures. I wasn't even drawing when I was playing dungeons and dragons. hehe
