Now that everyone has left FFXI for WoW.....
..... it appears that SE finally got the RMT situation semi- under control. Actually I think they got it under control last summer when gil went up to about $40/mil on Titan, as opposed to the $5/mil it was in X-mas of 2005.
I can't help but wonder how much different things would have been if they didn't let it get that bad. I remember I hit 73 around the time prices sky rocked. My adaman set of armor cost me a few mil which I had obtained legitimately. Needless to say when SE fixed the problem, I lost the money I had invested.
Oh well, can't say it was a total loss. I remember buying up certain items like beds for 200k, and jacking up the price to 500k and that got me a few mil.
How many people switched over to WoW or quit in the time it took them to remedy this problem?
So yeah, thank you SE, for fixing that whole RMT thing (*cough*) day late dollar short (*cough*)

It wasn't just the economy, though, it was the entire endgame situation. They made it impossible to get anything worth having, and that was really the only reason to keep playing. It got to a point where the only reason anyone was still staying in the game was to help their friends, who were in turn only staying to help their friends. When somebody left, everyone else followed.
WoW, too, was starting to face a similar problem with the endgame... until Burning Crusade. I overheard a friend tell me "I don't even see the point in raiding anymore, everything is about BC now." And that's a bad thing? You can still raid for gear if you want it, but how is it bad that you can now get comparable or even superior gear through activities that don't require over a year of time invested in doing the same thing over and over again?
FFXI learned this lesson too late in its lifecycle to save itself, Salvage was a step in the right direction, but still doesn't solve the problem. The game is not going to die in the next year, I don't think, but unless they start making some major changes very quickly (and let's face it, we know the way SE works,) it's a problem that's not going to correct itself.

The problem with Salvage is that ur nerf too much no? No equip, spell, stat mod technically u going in as a sort of lvl1 IMO. As for end-game RMT is now doing the sky-god.

My issue with FF is that it's boring, and for the absolute extreme longest time (the majority of my playtime), playing it because it was fun, in the general sense of the word, hasn't been true.
There's the typical fun that keeps you enthralled and on the edge of your seat. This died out after a few months and was quickly replaced by:
The "fun" in setting goals and achieving them. And then of course comes the feeling of not wanting to lose "time invested" and FF's most definite greatest attraction: the social aspect.
No matter what changes SE made to the way certain things work, unless they dynamically and drastically changed the way some of the jobs work, I'll continue to play and not have "fun."
No matter what battlefields, new endgame content, new areas, new monsters, new cities, etc etc that they add - I'd be pressing the exact same buttons in order to do the exact same things in the exact same mundane routine.
Now if they made Monk function more like Monk in FF Tactics... or possibly maybe simply allowed me to Chakra others... it'd be funner again, at least for a time.
Also something I was looking forward to in FF before I began playing, was PvP, due to how involved with PvP I was in my last MMORPG, Ultima Online. PvP in FF, it is safe to say, is non existant.
Radically changes how jobs function/what they do, and add less restricted PvP and I'd be having fun again. Also raising the Level cap (while restricting subs to 37) would be a cheap way to extend the game's life.

I find it hard to believe we kept at it as long as we did. I mean, it should of been abundantly clear to us that when 3 of our (at least my) closest friends made false accusations, won an Osode and then lolBaled on us the next day, that we were no longer going to be able to get the same satisfaction from the game. My addiction was fed when someone got an item that they wanted. The better the item, the better the feeding.
After all that shit went down it just felt like everything we did was in vain. Everyone's attitude changed, officers in particular. If the 3 stooges didn't sell us out like that, cooler heads probably would of prevailed in the Cynric drama. I would of said fuck it, who cares how he lost his pearl, just re-pearl him, let him have his crack at an Osode and see what happens. What can I say, I let the 3 stooges gang bang me out of an Osode and a shit ton of other items, you can swallow my load, eat my pubs off a plate before I was going to let something like that happen again. But it came at a cost. To keep the members and officers of the LS happy we took a hammering in public in the form of Cyn's KI thread. Then all the cock-sucking EO haters logged onto there KI accounts, a bunch of other haters made fake accounts or first time accounts... I was out of energy at that point. I wanted to respond and defend myself and the shell but the thread campers out numbered me, the stupidity in that thread was in abundance. I was tired, I -was- used. I wasn't appreciated by most... I just gave up. I pay 15$ a month to play a game... Me, my shell, my friends, the organizaion we created gave so much to this community... All in vain. All to be tainted. The reasons we played for no longer existed.
Whatever fun was, it has been gone for a long time... If the 3 stooges weren't so selfish and angry... Where would the shell be now? Would we have advanced in our plans to expand our horizons again? Would we have beat DL? Conquered sea and gound like so many of us wanted to do? They left for what? lolKoS? Gimme a break... OoTD? Great shell with tons of good players... Oddly, they folded not too long after it became EOoTD and like half there roster was former Orphans... Things that make you go Hmmmmmm...
